Our story

We started with a question nobody could answer.

Where, exactly, did this oyster come from? In Malaysia in the early 2020s, almost nobody could tell you. So we decided to build a business that always could.

Chapter one

A wetland that already knew how

The Setiu wetlands in Terengganu are one of the most productive brackish-water systems in Malaysia. Freshwater from the interior meets the South China Sea in a long, sheltered lagoon behind a sand spit, the exact conditions oysters want, and conditions the local community had been quietly working for generations.

What was missing was not knowledge of the water. It was everything that comes after the harvest: reliable seed, consistent grading, a depuration process anyone could verify, a cold chain that held, and a buyer who paid a fair price on time.

We started with a handful of lines and a commitment to fix the parts of the chain that were broken, rather than adding another middleman to it.

Chapter two

If you don't control the seed, you control nothing

Our first hard lesson was about spat. Buying seed on the open market meant inheriting somebody else's genetics, somebody else's disease history, and somebody else's delivery schedule. A late shipment could cost an entire season.

So we went upstream. We began culturing our own microalgae to feed larvae, and partnered with Malaysia's licensed hatcheries to produce both triploid and diploid spat to our own specification. Today we supply spat to other growers as well as ourselves.

That single decision is what makes the rest of this business possible. Every promise we make about a finished oyster depends on knowing where it started.

Chapter three

One state first, then the others

Sabah is where the oysters are grown. Four contract farm sites, worked by farmers our partner Sea Life Aquaculture supplies with spat and equipment and buys the harvest back from, then purged and graded at their hatchery at Tawau. Everything we sell today comes out of that one state.

Melaka and Setiu, in Terengganu, are next, and they are genuinely next rather than already running. We would rather be one state that works than three that are announced. A protocol proven in only one bay is not yet a protocol; it is a habit. Running the same one across four sites is what turned ours into a protocol, and it is what the next two coasts will inherit.

The two companies are separate on purpose. Sabah requires a Sabah registered entity to operate on Sabah land, and keeping the hatchery and the distribution business apart keeps government grant segmentation clean for both. It reads like an accounting detail and it is not: it is why a Peninsular company can promise you a Sabah oyster and still tell you exactly which raft it came off.

Chapter four

The part that actually matters

An oyster farm is a rare thing: a food business that leaves its environment better than it found it. No feed, no freshwater, no antibiotics. A single adult oyster filters hundreds of litres a day, and the racks themselves become habitat for juvenile fish.

It is also a rare thing economically. Oyster farming is labour that cannot be offshored, in coastal communities where good work is scarce. Households in our farming programme earn between RM 3,000 and RM 4,000 a month, money that stays in the kampung.

That is what we mean by sustainable ventures, scalable impact. Not a slogan on a wall. A model designed so that growing the business and improving the coastline are the same activity.

Everything that happened on land

The chapters above are about growing oysters. This part is the rest of it: site visits to other people’s ponds, meetings in borrowed rooms, exhibition carpet, and nights behind a counter selling three pieces at a time.

Learning on somebody else’s ponds

Invited to ScaleUp, as a guest

We were invited to ScaleUp and went to learn how other sustainability startups and scaleups build their case. The stand in this photograph belongs to another exhibitor, not to us. We came away with better questions than we arrived with.

Traceability over trust-me

Every box carries its traceability record: farm, line, harvest date and depuration. We would rather show you the paperwork than ask for the benefit of the doubt.

Measure, don't assume

Salinity, temperature, tide and rainfall are monitored continuously rather than judged by eye. When conditions move outside range, harvesting stops before there is a problem to manage.

Pay the coast properly

The people standing chest-deep in the water are the business. Fair, predictable income for coastal households is a design requirement, not a CSR line item.

Grow the industry, not just the company

We supply spat, seaweed and microalgae to other Malaysian growers and publish what we learn. A single farm is fragile. An industry is not.
